Spektroskopi 13C-NMR menghasilkan informasi struktur mengenai karbon-karbon dalam sebuah molekul organik. Dalam spektroskopi 1H-NMR kita bekerja dengan isotop hidrogen alamiah dengan kelimpahan 99,985 %, atom hidrogen alamiah adalah 1H, sedangkan atom karbon dalam alam 98,9 % adalah 12C, suatu isotop yang intinya tak mempunyai spin (I = 0). Karbon -13 hanya merupakan 1,1 % atom karbon yang terdapat di alam ( I = ½).

Carbon-13 is only 1.1% of the carbon atoms found in nature (I = ½).
