Awalnya, Sesajen adalah warisan dari zaman Kerajaan Hindu. Sejarah ini ada kaitannya dengan penyebaran agama islam oleh Sunan Kalijaga di Jawa. Dahulunya, Orang jawa tidak ingin meyakini agama/kepercayaan yang dibawa oleh Sunan Kalijaga yaitu islam. Mereka terus mencari kekuatan yang lebih besar dengan menganggap sesuatu yang gaib itu sebagai tempat untuk memohon. Selain itu, mereka menganggap bahwa manusia lahir di sebuah tempat itu tidak hidup sendiri melainkan hidup berdampingan dengan makhluk yang tidak tampak dengan mata biasa sehingga sajen dapat menjadi perantara untuk berhubungan atau berkomunikasi dengan mereka. Misalnya, Grogol, salah satu tempat di kota Jogja ini ada yang hidup selain manusia namun tidak kelihatan dengan mata biasa. Oleh sebab itu, orang memerlukan ritual2 khusus untuk melihat mereka. Melihat kondisi ini, Sunan Kalijaga mencoba mencari cara yaitu dengan memasukkan masyarakat Hindu untuk dicampurkan dengan masyarakat Jawa tersebut. Akhirnya sebagian orang Jawa mengikut apa yang di ajarkan oleh sunan Kalijaga yang memang adalah orang Jawa sendiri.

This history is related to the spread of Islam by Sunan Kalijaga in Java. previously, people do not want to believe Javanese religion / belief brought by Sunan Kalijaga namely Islam. they continue to seek greater power to assume something supernatural as a place to beg. in addition,they assume that humans are born in a place that does not live alone but rather coexist with creatures that do not appear to the naked eye so sajen may be intermediaries to connect or communicate with them. for example, Sky View, one of the places in town Jogja there is life other than humans, but invisible to the naked eye. therefore,people requiring special ritual2 to see them. see this condition, Sunan Kalidjaga trying to find ways to incorporate the Hindu society to be mixed with the Java community. finally some java follow what it teaches by Sunan Kalidjaga which indeed is one of Java itself.
