Bahasa adalah alat komunikasi yang digunakan beberapa kelompok tutur yang luas yang tentu saja ada tata bahasanya, sejarahnya, dan standar digunakan sebagi alat komunikasi suatu negara, bahasa iptek, politik dan sebagainya serta dipahami secara baik oleh masyarakat tutur yang luas (mutually intelligibility).
Bahasa mempunyai dua aspek mendasar, yaitu bentuk, baik bunyi, tulisan maupun strukturnya, dan makna, baik leksikal maupun fungsional dan structural. Jika kita memperhatikan bahasa dengan terperinci dan teliti, kita akan melihat bahwa bahasa itu dalam bentuk dan maknanya menunjukkan perbedaan-perbedaan kecil atau besar antara pengungkapan satu dengan pengungkapan yang lain, lalu kita akan mendengarkan perbedaannya.
