Pendekatan ekspresif adalah pendekatan yang mendasarkan pada pencipta atau pengarang karya sastra. Telaah ini didasarkan pada teori ekspresif yang memandang suatu karya seni yang secara esensial sebagai dunia internal pengarang yang terungkap sehingga menjadi dunia eksternal berupa karya seni, perwujudannya melalui proses kreatif, dengan titik tolak dorongan perasaan pengarang, dan hasilnya adalah kombinasi antara persepsi, pikiran dan perasaan pengarangnya. Pendekatan expressive mencakup tentang bagaimana pengarang mengespresikan idenya.
