Fenil propanoid merupakan senyawa fenol di alam yang mempunyai cincin aromatik dengan rantai samping terdiri dari 3 atom karbon. Senyawa fenil propanoid mempunyai kerangka struktur cincin benzene yang terikat dengan tiga atom karbon (Ph-C-C-C). secara biosintetik maka golongan fenil propanoid adalah turunan asam amino aromatic yaitu fenilalanin dan fenilpropanoid. Beberapa kelompok yang termasuk dalam golongan fenil propanoid adalah kelompok asam hidroksi sinamat, kumarin, sebagai lignin dan fenil propena. Beberapa fenil propanoid ada yang terikat dengan gula (glikosida) sehingga yang tidak terikat gula disebut aglikon. Golongan fenilpropanoid yang paling tersebar luas adalah asam hidroksi sinamat, yaitu suatu senyawa yang merupakan bangunan dasar lignin . Empat macam asam hidroksi sinamat banyak terdapat dalam tumbuhan. Keempat senyawa tersebut yaitu asam ferulat, sinapat, kafeat dan p-kumarat.

The fenilpropanoid is the most widespread is the acid hydroxy sinamat, a compound which is the basic building lignin. Four kinds of sinamat hydroxy acid is found in many plants. The four compounds are acids, sinapat, ferulat kafeat and p-kumarat.
