Spektroskopi infra merah digunakan untuk menentukan spektrum infra merah suatu senyawa hingga memberikan gambaran mengenai berbagai gugus fungsional dalam sebuah molekul organik. Hal ini terjadi bila sinar infra merah dilewatkan melalui cuplikan senyawa organik, maka sejumlah frekuensi diserap sedangkan frekuensi yang lain diteruskan tanpa diserap. Jika digambarkan antara persen adsorbansi atau persen transmitansi lawan frekuensi maka akan dihasilkan suatu spektrum infra merah.
