Kata “picaresque” berasal dari bahasa Spanyol “picaro” yang berarti penjahat. “picaresque Chonicle” boleh dipandang sebagai pelopor novel “gangster”. Thomas Nash (1567-1601) adalah salah satu penulis cerita “picaresque” ini, dan karyanya yang terkenal adalah “The Unfortunate Traveller, or the Life of Jack Wilton” (1594).
