1. Objective
Pendekatan obyektif adalah pendekatan yang mendasarkan pada suatu karya sastra. Dengan pendekatan obyektif ini penelaah melihat karya sastra sebagai produk manusia atau artifak. Karya sastra, dalam hal ini, merupakan suatu karya yang otonom, yang dipisahkan dari hal-hal di luar karya itu sendiri. Dengan demikian telaah karya sastra dengan pendekatan obyektif beranjak dari aspek-aspek atau unsur-unsur yang langsung membangun karya sastra. Signifikansi dan nilai karya sastra dilihat dari unsur-unsur dan keterhubungan antara unsur-unsur karya Sastra.
Telaah karya sastra dengan pendekatan obyektif sering dikenal dengan telaah struktural, yang dimaksudkan untuk mendeskripsikan tema, tokoh, penokohan, alur, setting, sudut pandangan yang terdapat dalam karya sastra.

Tema yang terdapat dalam puisi ini adalah tentang kehidupan anak-anakyang penuh dengan penderitaan. Keadaan anak-anak yang sangat menyedihkan.

Tokoh yang ada dalam puisi ini adalah, Elizabeth, anak-anak, Tuhan, pendeta, seorang ibu, orang tua, Alice, dan masyarakat.
c. Penokohan
Dalam puisi ini Elizabeth sebagai penulis puisi ini. Anak-anak sebagai tokoh utama yang mengalami penderitaan dalam hidup mereka. Tuhan sebagai pencipta alam semesta dan pemberi kasih sayang, tapi diragukan keberadaannya oleh anak-anak. Pendeta sebagai orang yang memberi khotbah tapi tidak mampu menyelamatkan kehidupan anak-anak yang penuh penderitaan. Seorang ibu sebagai orang yang hanya bisa diam dan membiarkan anak-anak mereka bekerja keras. Orang tua sebagai orang yang tidak bisa menolong anak-anak mereka dalam penderitaan. Alice, seorang anak kecil yang mati karena tidak mampu menahan rasa sakit dan lelah karena terus menerus bekerja. Masyarakat sebagai orang yang hanya bisa membiarkan anak-anak kerja keras.
