2. Tahap Praoperasi
Tahap ini terjadi pada anak-anak umur 2-7 tahun. Pada periode ini anak-anak bisa melakukan sesuatu sebagai hasil meniru atau mengamati sesuatu model tingkah laku dan mampu melakukan simbolisasi. Anak-anak pada umur 1-2 tahun akan mengalami munculnya peristiwa yang disebut fungsi simbolik. Kemunculan fungsi simbolik ini menandai dimulainya tahap praoperasi. Fungsi simbolik adalah kepandaian anak-anak untuk membedakan significant atau yang dilambangkan dengan significant itu. Pada tahap sebelumnya anak-anak belum mampu membedakan apa itu signifant dari significatenya. Jadi, pada tahap sebelumnya setiap permainan yang diberikan merupakan latihan gerak saja. Sedangkan pada tahap ini permainan yang diberikan merupakan permainan simbolik, yaitu suatu benda dan dilambangkan oleh benda lain. Pada tahap ini, anak-anak mulai mendapatkan bahasa, yaitu lambang-lambang ucapan. Fungsi simbolik ini membuat kemudahan pada kecerdasan anak-anak. Artinya, anak-anak telah mampu menata ulang hal-hal yang terjadi pada masa lalu, membuat rencana yang akan datang atau cita-cita, dan memikirkan benda-benda atau hal-hal yang tidak ada pada tempat dan waktu yang terjadi sekarang.
